Caterpillar is best known to the public for its heavy equipment such as backhoes, dozers, and excavators. Its diesel and natural gas generator set product lines. However, they have an equally well-deserved reputation for being durable and high performing.
When power goes down, people turn to Caterpillar to keep everything running. During the largest power outage in US history in 2003, Caterpillar supplied two megawatt trailer units and 300 backup generators to New York, Detroit, and Cleveland to provide power. Even Wall Street trading remained uninterrupted during the blackout thanks to these Caterpillar generators.
Caterpillar commercial diesel generator sets have power ratings ranging from 13kW to 17,460kW while its natural gas backup commercial generator sets have power ratings from 65kW to 6,520kW. There are three types of power typically supplied by Caterpillar diesel and natural gas generators:
- Continuous Operating Power (COP): Continuous, constant load power with an average output range of 70-100% for an unlimited number of hours per year.
- Prime Rated Power (PRP): Indefinite running time power in a variable load setting with average load not exceeding 70% and with no more than 500 hours a year at a 100% load.
- Emergency Standby Power (ESP): Maximum power available for a variable electric load not to exceed 70% of capacity and with a total operating time of no more than 200 hours per year.

Caterpillar Diesel & Natural Gas Generator Sets
Benjamin Holt invented the first Caterpillar tractor in the early 1900s when he replaced the wheels on one of his company's steam tractors with wooden tracks bolted with chains.
The Caterpillar Tractor Company – officially shortened to Caterpillar in 1986 – went on to design and manufacture heavy construction, mining, and excavation equipment. Caterpillar machines significantly contributed to construction projects such as the Grand Coulee Dam and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Caterpillar generators supply continuous, prime, and standby power which is reliable and economical no matter the conditions. Exacting production guidelines ensure every major component of Caterpillar generators is individually tested. Assembled units are then further tested above 100% of rated loads for operation and safety.
While diesel Caterpillar generators have a well-established history, a newer technological development is the combined heat and power (CHP) system which uses pipeline natural gas as a source of energy. This has created new advantages in power generation such as up to 90% energy efficiency and reduced energy costs and emissions versus separate heat and power systems.
Plus, these natural gas generator sets are particularly well suited for situations where:
- Peak shaving can be employed during high-usage times to avoid excessive electrical costs.
- The supply of natural gas is more reliable than the local power grid.
- Natural gas is a viable low-cost alternative to grid-based power.
When you need power if the grid goes down or you aren't on the grid to begin with, Caterpillar generators have an established reputation for serving these industries:
- Construction
- Data centers
- Demolition
- Forestry
- Hospitals and healthcare facilities
- Manufacturing
- Material handling
- Offshore oil platforms
- Pipelines
- Remote mining and excavation operations
No matter your industry or power requirements, Depco Power Systems has the Caterpillar diesel and natural gas gensets to meet your needs.
